Bob Barton - Kalanka by the Rishi Gorge
Tuesday 25 March 2025, 07:30pm - 09:30pm
Tuesday 25 March 2025

Bob will describe a 1978 ascent of Kalanka (6997m) in the Garwhal Himalaya with Allen Fyffe. They climbed the SE Flank from the Changabang Glacier - a classic 'uncertain til the last' mountaineering experience in the Nanda Devi Sanctuary - surely one of the most beautiful places in the world. High on the glacier they had an unforgettable nocturnal encounter with a snow leopard and higher still, fantastic views of Changabang and the sunrise over Nanda Devi.

Their approach followed the footsteps of Tilman and Shipton along the remarkable Rishi Gorge in an appropriately lightweight manner with five porters and a few goats. Bob will explain how his tracks subsequently intersected with the same pioneers in East Africa, Eskdale and elsewhere.

In 1983, Bob and Allen climbed in the Garwhal again, making the first ascent of the wonderful SW Pillar of Bhagirathi 3, now a popular goal for technical climbers. The final push was a 14-day round trip, capsule style from base camp. Bob will bring some images of the technical climbing on B3 and, time permitting, will include these in the talk.

The talk will be held at the Alpine Club's premises at 55 Charlotte Road, London, EC2A 3QF from 7PM on 25 March 2025.
